Chapter Thirteen

With her eyes half closed, Drew languished in the sensory delight that was Wren lying in her arms. She idly ran her fingers through Wren’s long hair. They lay sprawled out on the sofa with the TV on quietly in the background, but neither watched what was playing. Instead, they had shifted and turned until Drew lay back and Wren had melted into her. Her grandma had gone to bed an hour ago, bidding them good night and hugging Wren close. Now they were alone, content in the stillness.

“The beat of your heart is going to send me to sleep,” Wren said, stirring a little. “For a lanky thing you’re surprising comfortable.”

“Must be all the cake I eat, padding me out in all the right places for you,” Drew said. “You’re welcome to stay here. You can take my bed. I’ll sleep out here on the sofa.”

Wren shifted to catch Drew’s gaze. “You wouldn’t sleep with me?”

“I’d be a gentlewoman and save that for when we’d want to do more than sleep.” Drew tried not to laugh at Wren’s pouty bottom lip. “Besides, I know we’re not in the most ideal of situations…”

“You mean with your grandma sleeping just down the hallway?”

“It can be something of a mood killer.” Understatement of the century, Drew thought to herself.

“How many girls have you brought home, Drew?”

Drew thought she heard a hint of jealousy in Wren’s tone. She had to think back to her last date. It had been a long while ago. “One here, not counting you. And she never slept over. She never got past the meet and greet.”

“Did Mae welcome her?”

“She did, but didn’t welcome her back. The woman knew of my circumstances and talked around Grandma as if she were deaf or stupid. It would have been funny if it hadn’t been so mortifying how she shouted at Grandma like she was senile.”

“Senile is the last thing Mae is.” Wren snuggled back down onto Drew. “I have to ask. Are you usually so…reticent in touching someone?”

Drew sighed quietly. She knew Wren would notice. It was kind of hard to miss for someone as tactile as Wren could be. “I like to get to know someone first, spend time learning about them. I find intimacy a little…intimidating. I never really learned when it was appropriate to instigate it.”

“You usually wait for the other woman to touch you first?”

“Kind of. I mean, it’s difficult to know when a hug can mean something more. I always err on the side of caution.” Drew laughed at herself. “Not that I have been flushed with much success with partners.”

“You’re not a virgin though?”

Drew shook her head. “No, but I could count on one hand and still have fingers to spare how many women I’ve been with.” Drew nervously ran a hand over her hair. “It’s not like my situation is ideal. We could sleep together here. Grandma’s hearing is not so good that she could hear every moan and scream coming from behind closed doors.
